Shield Celebrating World Oral Health Day in Pakistan

World Oral Health Day is celebrated every year on 20th March. WOHD is celebrated to raise awareness regarding the importance of oral healthcare and the role it plays in our overall well-being. Apart from many other things, good hygiene habit plays a significant role to maintain a healthy lifestyle.  Having good oral hygiene habits and going for regular dental checkups from early in life can help maintain optimal oral health into old age.

In this part of the world, Oral Healthcare is considered very expensive and people tend to avoid going for regular checkups. Especially in Pakistan where smoking and tobacco eating/chewing is very common, the need for oral healthcare rises but it is a misconception that dentists charge exuberant fees. If we look at it, private clinics all around the world or even in Pakistan, charge significant amount while also providing the best of services. Let’s be honest here: a lot of people still think dental healthcare comes in luxury. However, Pakistan has a lot of government subsidized clinics/hospitals where the dental checkups/surgeries or any other dental related service is offered in very nominal fees. Even in my area I know a dental facility which provides all the services in really good fees. It is called Hamdard University Dental Hospital and it has an amazing staff including surgeons and even dental specialists. Despite the availability of such government run clinics or annual events, people pay no importance in taking care of their gums/teeth!

Like many other countries, WOHD is also celebrated in Pakistan. Not a lot of people are aware of this day and how it is celebrated in Pakistan. I remember back in university days, we would have Annual Health Day and doctors from different fields would visit an everything from consultation to the check ups used to be free for the students. I recently came across this post by Shield Pakistan which mentioned how the company is setting up free clinics for checkups on the WOHD in Pakistan from 9am to 1pm across the country at multiple locations.

I think it is a very good step by Shield to celebrate #ShieldWOHD17 for people who cannot afford dental healthcare and for the people who are very skeptical about such examinations. Sometimes we don’t even give our teeth enough credits. As much as we use our gums and teeth on daily basis, we should take care of these just like any other body part. Eating/Chewing are some basic activities which we cannot live without then why do we ignore our teeth so much?

Now, before I wrap this up – let’s recall a few basics about brushing your teeth:

  1. Brush your teeth twice a day.

  2. Replace your toothbrush regularly.

  3. Practice good technique to brush your teeth.

  4. Spend at least 3 minutes while brushing. Don’t ignore the inside upper & lower teeth.

  5. Use a fluoride toothpaste (helps remove plaque).

  6. Rinse out your mouth and your tooth brush in the end.

I urge all the readers to keep a tab of their Facebook page where they will be announcing the locations and go by yourself, take your family along, and share the details with a friend/relative who could benefit from this cause.

Don’t forget: clean and healthy teeth means a beautiful smile. So #ShieldYourSmile! 🙂
